COMMUNITY NOTES:

Nov. 4:
Last Chance — No Bachelor Catalogue Without Photos!
TALKEETNA — There will not be a Bachelors’ Auction catalogue this December unless enough local
bachelors volunteer and also pose or provide a photo for the annual fund-raising auction catalogue.
Organizer Rich Crain said another meeting will take place Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., at the Latitude 62 Restaurant
and Lodge if the facility is available that evening. The deadline for getting catalogue photos taken or
collected is Nov. 8.
The annual event raises money for a fund for victims of domestic abuse and often the society also gives
grants to local charities and youth sports teams. It usually draws hundreds of people to town, many of them
single women who bid on Bachelors during a raucous event that also features music. Before the auction, the
bachelors traditionally hold a Wilderness Woman skills contest where participants compete for prizes in a
series of tasks.
Last year’s Auction raised $8,381. The Society gave half of the proceeds “to a fund with the Alaska
Community Foundation and the Jessica Stevens Foundation which directly funds the Sunshine Community
Health Center’s efforts to support women and children that have been victimized by domestic violence
and/or sexual assault,” according to the Society’s Web site.
The annual auction and its surrounding events are a popular regional draw. Crain said that bachelors who
are “50-something” and older are in particular demand, but everyone is needed.
Call Crain at 733-1947 for more information and to confirm the site of the meeting.

Ryhythm & Red Shoes Orchestra
Rhythm & Red Shoes Orchestra (RRSO) is an organization of Denali Arts Council’s Music Academy and is
composed of players ages 9 to 50 and over.  They demonstrate their finely developed listening and playing
skills to the community as they perform music in a conductor-less chamber style ensemble.  This is a free
one hour concert at 4:30 p.m. and all are encouraged to come and support neighbors and friends in a
friendly concert atmosphere.  Sheldon Community Arts Hangar, Talkeetna.

Nov. 13
Second Saturday Art Show & Reception: Focus on Kids
Focus On Kids display at Sheldon Community Arts Hangar, 4-7 p.m. On display until early December. Free

Friday, Nov. 26
Emporium Decorium Holiday Bazaar
4 p.m.-9 p.m.
Free
Not your everyday craft show, on the contrary; the Emporium Decorium is as interesting and sophisticated
as the name suggests. Shopping can indeed be fun with live music and refreshments, and we are not
talking jingle bells and sugar cookies. Visit with your favorite local artists and craft vendors at this year's
holiday bazaar at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar, nibble on some decadent bonbons and even enjoy a
glass of wine if you come on Friday night.  The event runs three days, giving you time to hint to your loved
ones about that special something on your own wish list, and there is plenty of time to get gifts in the mail
for the holidays.  This year give your friends and relatives locally handmade gifts, useful as well as
beautiful.  "As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life"  -John Lubbock.  Sheldon Community Arts
Hangar, Talkeetna.

Festival of Lights
Friday, Dec. 10
7-8 p.m.
Cost: Free
2010 marks the 21st anniversary of Festival of Lights, an annual, non-denominational, celebration of the
Holiday Season. The Denali Arts Council has provided a forum for community members to gather, sing
seasonal songs, tell stories or recite poems.  It is our gift to you, the people of this abundantly talented
region. If you are interested in helping out or participating in the celebration, contact coordinator Nick
Condon at 355-5382 for details. This is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to get in the mood for
the holidays. Cans of food are accepted for The Food Bank. Hot drinks and refreshments provided. Sheldon
Community Arts Hangar, Talkeetna.

From the November/December Newsletter: In October, the USSI Board voted to increase the price of
weekly lunches from $6 to $7 for members and from $7 to $9 for non-members. The new prices were
effective November 1. The office has begun selling multi-lunch punch cards at the new prices.
Previously-purchased multi-lunch punch cards will remain valid until all the punches have been used.
The increase was in response to data which showed that the original price was not covering the costs of
food and running the kitchen. The higher increase for non-members was also done to encourage
individuals to join USSI.
Events:
Santa Claus will hold court at the Senior Center on Dec. 11 at 11 a.m., and will stay for an all-you-can-eat
pancake brunch. There will also be activities for the kids. He will have to leave promptly at 2 p.m., so have
the kids bring their Christmas wish lists and parents should bring their cameras. A professional camera
studio will also be there for pictures with Santa.
Parents can bring along well-behaved pets, too, but the pets will not be allowed in the eating area.
